Phantom Planet: The Guest
Rating: In a world where commercial radio is flooded with waves of emo, rap-metal, and punk-pop, Phantom Planet’s The Guest is a spot of high ground, untouched and uninfluenced by the muddy water surrounding it. The album is straight up guitar pop, with some of the catchiest bass lines and vocal melodies you’ll ever hear. Vocalist Alex Greenwald’s singing is sweet and endearing, yet totally earnest and believable. The band’s three guitar attack fills the air with swirling guitar lines that fit together perfectly to make a cohesive whole. And the bass lines–wow. Anybody looking for some pop to play should definitely check this disc out.

Wasn’t “California” the theme song to The O.C.? Is it still? I don’t know, but I’ve watched a few times and noticed they actually do play some good music on that show. And by good I mean Phantom Planet kind of pop music. So I guess what I’m trying to say is, I like Phantom Planet.

“California” was indeed the theme song to the O.C., and I think it still is, although I don’t watch the show. And if you like the music on the show, you may be interested to know that they occasionally put out compilations of music played on the show. They can be a little spotty, but there’s almost always a few good tracks on those.

I absolutely love this album. Fun, and extremely hooky. I do like their newewst self titled album, but this is in the same pop class as Semisonic and Brendan Benson.

I would take this over Semisonic and Brendan Benson any day. Nothing against them, I love their work, but this is one my favorite records ever.

Clearly understandable. I was just using those artists to make a comparison to other “pop” records that are shiny, big, and catchy as hell.
