The Cloud Room: The Cloud Room

Album cover for The Cloud Room: The Cloud Room Rating:
***½

The Cloud Room fashion multi-hyphenated new wave-influenced, beat-driven pop-rock, and are probably headed for success. As I write this, they are “Band of the Day” at spin.com, and their first single, “Hey Now Now” is starting to get airplay around the country. Lead Singer J. sounds like a happier Paul Banks (of Interpol fame), making the comparisons to ’80s British post-punkers like Joy Division and New Order easy to make, but The Cloud Room is also clearly influenced by the NYC dance-rock scene from which they sprang. They aren’t the best band from the scene, but moments like the delirious melody on “Blackout!” and the disco bassline of “Waterfall” make their debut a worthy entry into the field that holds great promise for the band.
