Solex: The Laughing Stock of Indie Rock

Album cover for Solex: The Laughing Stock of Indie Rock Rating:
****

Named after a small, Hungarian-made motor scooter, Solex is the project of Amsterdam-based record-shop owner and songwriter Elisabeth Esselink. That’s about as descriptive as one can accurately get with Solex, though, because her music is so odd. It’s rock music, but not in the conventional sense. It heavily uses samples, but it’s not hip-hop or electronica. It’s just … odd. Odd and catchy, that is. Esselink’s girlish voice is charming, and the hooks (if you’d like to call them that) are all ingratiating and memorable. The Laughing Stock of Indie Rock is full broken pop songs and reconstructed oddities, but it somehow all comes together to be an exciting and fresh take on pop music.

Motor scooters are just as spunky and funky as this CD is. I love it.
