Michael Penn: Mr. Hollywood, Jr. 1947

Album cover for Michael Penn: Mr. Hollywood, Jr. 1947 Rating:

It’s been a few years since Michael Penn’s last album (Aside: did you know Michael is the brother of Chris and Sean Penn?). He released MP4: Days Since a Lost Time Accident in 2000, continuing in his tradition of taking too long in between records. He’s always been a pretty solid pop songwriter, similar to his wife Aimee Mann (this guy is connected, it seems), and that hasn’t changed on Mr. Hollywood, Jr. 1947, but I just can’t manage to stay interested in the album. I don’t know if it’s a matter of pacing, or if none of the songs are very good. I think it may be a combination of both weak songs (for MP) and poor track order. The album sags under the weight of several ballads that aren’t quite interesting, but the stronger songs are worthy enough to save this from the scrap heap.

I couldn’t agree more. After the pop gem of MP4, this album looses steam in the middle under too many ballads. I will still buy whatever he comes out with next, though.
