Broken Social Scene: Broken Social Scene

Album cover for Broken Social Scene: Broken Social Scene Rating:
****½

One minute, delicate, ethereal pop music. The next, a blitzkrieg of sound, albeit sound arranged in the form of more pop music. It’s not for nothing that Broken Social Scene are ridiculously hyped. Their music is straightforward and immensely complex all at once, as they layer instrument over instrument on what is, underneath it all, a beautifully simple song. Sometimes, that is. Other times, the song structures out-prog prog bands. But even when they do, it’s not off-putting, because no matter what this musical collective (including Feist and Jason Collett, among others) does, it sounds sincere. Even the dabblings in electronica turn out well. The melodies can be buried deep in the earth’s core, beneath layers of shimmering sound and triumphant horn sections, or they can be front and center, preening for all the world; it doesn’t matter, because it’s all well done. And for that reason, Broken Social Scene is one of the best records of the year.
