Morcheeba: The Antidote

Album cover for Morcheeba: The Antidote Rating:
***½

Morcheeba have left trip-hop completely behind them (or at least to the side) on The Antidote, which finds the band sharing more stylistic ground with the psychedelia of Jefferson Airplane than with any of their previous work. They’ve found a new love for acoustic arrangements that include mostly live instruments, including horns. To go with their new style is a new singer, former Noonday Underground member Daisey Martey, whose voice fits the new style well. Any funk that came along with their old trip-hop has been swept away as well, leaving soul and psychedelic rock. The change is a strange one considering the source, but it’s a pleasant surpise.
