Nat Baldwin: Lights Out

Album cover for Nat Baldwin: Lights Out Rating:
***

Nat Baldwin has come up with a concept that hadn’t occurred to me yet. All of the sounds on Lights Out are created either by voices or Nat’s upright double bass. He bows, plucks, taps, and scratches his bass to make all of the musical backing to his Yorke-esque vocals. The results are interesting, if not always compelling. The longer tracks tend to be repetitive and boring, Baldwin could work on his songwriting, and he may want to consider overdubbing additional bass parts in the future, but to his credit, each track actually sounds different from the others. Generally speaking, the tone of Lights Out is a kind of creepy, sad one that leaves me a little uneasy, as if I were in an old black and white monster movie. But that’s probably just me.
