The Hotel Alexis is really a vehicle for singer/songwriter and band founder Sydney Alexis, and The Shining Example Is Lying On The Floor is the band‘s debut and part of the freshman class at new independent label Broken Sparrow Records. The music is quiet, slow, aching, heartbroken, and beautiful. Each song tells a sad story of loneliness and melancholy to a backing of acoustic and steel guitars, quiet drumming, root-note bass lines, and the occasional keyboard. That may not read like much, and it’s nothing revolutionary, but The Hotel Alexis’ brand of dusty Americana is refreshing, in a crushingly depressing way.
