Peter Walker: Young Gravity

Album cover for Peter Walker: Young Gravity Rating:
***½

(Dangerbird, 2006) Peter Walker’s Young Gravity, his sophomore full-length release, finds him playing a brand of indie rock that draws heavily from the classic pop/rock of Alex Chilton and the Rolling Stones and the country leanings of Neil Young, all while maintaining an aire of modernity. The largest strength of the album is Walker’s ability to synthesize his influences into a cohesive sound and then write songs that fit his style, as the album’s first two cuts, “What Do I Know” and “39 Stars,” demonstrate quite well. And while Walker is a proficient country-rocker, he also dabbles in Wilco-style ambience and atmospherics, to quite dreamy effect, on tunes like “Don’t Think Twice” and “By A Thread.” There are really no weak tracks on Young Gravity, but there are unfortnately not many standouts, aside from the aforementioned and the sadly apathetic “Talk To You.” However, a base of solid tracks plus a handful of highlights makes from quite an enjoyable album, and Young Gravity should appeal to fans of Jason Collett, Wilco, and Neil Young.
