The King of France: The King of France
Rating: (Echo, 2005) The King of France are a trio of indie-rockers (guitar, piano, drums) that play music with witty lyrics and slight hooks. Singer/guitarist Steve Salad’s vocals are a little thin and neurotic sounding at times, but his songwriting is what makes the band’s self-titled album worthwhile. None of the musicians in the band would ever be called virtuosos, and the production is perhaps overly sparse, but there’s a certain charm to some of Salad’s songs, like the paranoid “Watch Out For The Man” or the travel song “Moon.” Unfortunately for both the band and listeners, the writing on The King of France is spotty and eratic. Add that with Salad’s yelping vocals and the thin production, and the album just doesn’t quite hit its mark.
