Secret Machines: Ten Silver Drops
Rating: (Reprise, 2006) This is one of those records that I have been waiting for for a long time. Ever since I heard Now Here is Nowhere, I thought “God, I can’t wait to get their next record.” And now it is here. The spacey guitars are still all over the place, but beginning with “Alone, Jealous, and Stoned” the band lets you know that this will be a different record. Measured, but not really slow, the song is a look at the aftermath of a broken heart. It is a theme they repeat throughout the record on songs like the dreamy “I Want To Know (if it’s still possible)” and the throbbing “I Hate Pretending”. The album is filled with noise, feedback, and even an accordian (courtesy of The Band’s Garth Hudson), but there is a different pace throughout. There is a very good flow to the tracklist, as well. The only thing that is missing is the monumental drum sound from the first record. However, the album as a whole is a step in the right direction for the band. Maybe the stadiums they wish to fill aren’t that far away after all.
