(Thrive, 2006) Who would have thought that a band started by a former drummer would spawn another band fronted by a drummer? Well, the Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins steps to the mike for this sunny, often satisfying album. He stays behind the drums, though, and they remain a focal point throughout. It seems Taylor doesn’t get enough “fills” on the Foo’s albums, so this album is full of them. The songs, though, work well with his grainy, high voice. His lyrics could use a little bit of work, but that is to be expectd. “Louise” starts us off with, what else, a little drum pummeling. The catchy chorus saves the song. “Pitiful”, “Wasted Energy”, and “Better You Than Me” show Hawkins’ budding songwriting talent. Let’s hope this isn’t a one-off for this likable drummer.
