I’m a journalism student at the University of Kansas and a big nerd. My earliest influence in music included the Beatles, Paul Simon, and the Red Clay Ramblers, as it was their songs that my parents sang me as lullabies. As inexperienced, young parents, they hadn’t a clue what to sing to a crying baby and ended up singing their own favorite songs. Personally, I’m glad to have been spared all that kiddie crap. My younger sisters, sadly, were sung Raffi songs as children. Surprisingly, it didn’t rot their brains out. They’re resilient little buggers, though.
A couple years ago, I wrote up a long list of more current favorite music, with highlights including They Might Be Giants, Pixies, Ben Lee, and the Candy Butchers (I absolutely *adore* Mike Viola).
As resident computerslut, I’m in charge of the backend of musicbeet. For the record, we’re on a linux machine hosted at Lunarpages and the site is published largely through the brilliant assistance of Wordpress. I drew the vegetable graphics by hand with colored pencils (although I burned them a bit with Photoshop). All other graphics (excepting CD thumbnails or other such obviously-not-ours images, which are © their respective creators) are mine as well. If you’ve got any other tech queries, I’m glad to answer them.
What I’m listening to right now:
- At home: Trying to keep an even rotation of my iTunes library
- In the car: KJHK
Absolute favorites:
- Spoon’s Kill the Moonlight
- The Long Winters’ When I Pretend to Fall
- Mike Viola’s Hang on Mike
- Nada Surf’s Let Go
- The Decemberists’ Picaresque
- Ben Folds’ Rockin’ the Suburbs
- Paul Simon’s Graceland
